It turns out, ebikes are great exercise!

A survey of ebike purchasers found that most people are buying electric bikes for recreation and health reasons.

According to the survey, the top reasons to buy an electric bike were:

  • For recreation (78.89%)
  • To stay active (76.79%)
  • To get in shape (45.08%)

Ebike owners aren’t buying ebikes because they’re not fit enough for a conventional bike, either. The same survey found that 42% of ebike buyers reported they were in good health, 28.6% in very good health, and 10.68% in excellent health when they purchased their bikes.

Healthy people are recognizing that ebikes are a great way to get all of the health benefits of cycling, with all of the fun of a motorized assist that can help them cycle further and longer than they had before.

Ebike Owners Cycle More Often

A 2018 North American Study of Electric Bicycle Owners found that ebikes increased the frequency of riding for their owners. Before owning an ebike, about 30% of respondents rode their bike once a week and 25.1% rode daily.

But after purchasing an ebike, 91.5% ride frequently: 42.3% of ebike owners report riding weekly and 49.2% ride daily.

Another study showed that people who purchased an ebike increased their bicycle use from 2.1 km (1.3 miles) per day to 9.2 km (5.7 miles) per day on average.

That’s a 338% increase!

Ebike owners are definitely cycling further and more often, and that means they’re experiencing more of the amazing health benefits of cycling.

Cycling is cardio, an aerobic exercise that’s great for your heart, brain, and blood vessels. Aerobic exercise is recommended by the American Heart Association for people with, or at risk for, heart disease.

A 2016 study found that people who biked regularly had about 15% fewer heart attacks than did noncyclists. Even as little as half an hour of biking per week was linked to reduced rates of heart disease.

How much should you be cycling to support heart health? The AHA recommends adults get a minimum of 150 minutes per week (that’s about 20 minutes a day) of moderate-intensity aerobic activity or 75 minutes (10 minutes a day) of vigorous aerobic activity.

Regulates Blood Sugar

Regular aerobic exercise like cycling can also help regulate insulin levels and lower blood sugar. According to Harvard Medical School, both aerobic and strength training exercises can lower insulin resistance; combining both provides even more insulin-regulating benefits.

Improves Mood and Benefits Mental Health

Aerobic exercise triggers the release of endorphins, the body’s feel-good chemicals. Aerobic exercise, including cycling, has been studied for its benefits on mood and mental health and found to relieve stress and reduce anxiety and depression. Studies have also found exercise to improve self-esteem and cognitive function.

Healthy Bones, Muscles, and Joints

Cycling is overall good for your skeletal-muscular system, supporting strong healthy bones, muscles, and joints. Pedaling works as a resistance activity, which increases bone density and strengthening muscles like glutes, quadriceps, hamstrings, hip flexors, and calves. Cycling is also easy on the joints.

Weight Loss

In a study funded by the National Institute of Health and published in the Obesity journal, researchers set out to discover if exercise alone could result in weight loss, without cutting calories or other dietary interventions.

Participants exercised an average of 44 minutes, 5x a week for 10 months. The results concluded that “significant reductions in weight” compared to a sedentary control group.
