Best Gifts from the Specialized Holiday Gift Guide

Here are some of the highlights from this year’s guide:

Best Gift for Kids

There’s a very clear winner when it comes to the best gift for kids who love to ride bikes: the Specialized Jett.

A boy riding a Specialized Jett bicycle on a wooded trail.

Because of their growth spurts and growth patterns, the perfect fitting kids’ bike is a short-lived “just right”.

The Jett is the most adjustable and highly kids-specific bike on the market.

Specialized researchers found that kids grow faster in their arms and legs than their torso, so they built a bike that can accommodate average growth for up to 3 summers. Adjustability comes from 2-hole positions for cranks, a longer seatpost, and adjustable handlebars for extended reach. Specialized created a special tool to help parents find the perfect size Jett for their fast-growing kiddos. You can find it here.

Best Cycling Stocking Stuffers

Specialized has a plethora of stocking stuffers and gifts under $50. Like long-fingered Body Geometry Gloves for men and women ($40) to keep you on the road even when the weather is frightful.

Air Tool Pumps for road ($30), sport ($15), and MTB ($30) will keep your favorite cyclist from feeling flat, while Flash 300 ($40) Headlight will light up their way brighter than Rudolph’s red nose in the middle of a cloudy night.

Best Gifts for Winter Rides

Specialized’s Holiday Gift Guide offers plenty of giftable goods to keep your favorite cyclist cozy and warm as they ride through a winter wonderland.

Wrap your loved ones up in a Long-Sleeved Thermal Jersey ($125) to insulate and manage moisture buildup, and they’ll feel cozier than a hot cup of cocoa on a cold winter’s night.

The Prime Series Waterproof Gloves ($60-$65) will withstand rain, sleet, and snow. A Polartec Neoshell upper to keep your hands safe from wind and chilly weather, and an interior waterproof sleeve keeps hands dry and fully protected from the elements. Pair that with a hydrophobic AX Suede palm and you’ll have all the dexterity and comfort you need.

5 Benefits of Electric Bikes

5 Benefits of Electric Bikes

If you’ve started seeing electric bikes everywhere lately, it’s for good reason. From getting more exercise to cutting down on car trips, every ebike owner has their own reason why they made the decision to go electric. Here are five reasons why everyone is riding an ebike:

Getting More Out of Your Ride

If you think electric bikes are for novice riders, think again. Even the most dedicated cyclists are enjoying the biggest benefit of electric bikes: the ability to ride further, faster, and longer. Electric bikes allow riders to explore territories that may have previously been out of reach or to cover more ground in less time.

Ebikes can allow you to go an average 4x further on your rides, taking you to new heights — literally.

Good for Your Health

According to a report by the Transport Research Laboratory, conventional bikes are used only 25 times per year. In comparison, ebike riders are using their bikes far more often:

  • 81% of ebikes are used 1x weekly
  • 30% of ebikes are used 1x daily

That means ebike riders are getting a whole lot more physical exercise than those who leave their bikes parked in the garage the other 340 days a year.

Sure, electric bikes provide pedal assistance. But that doesn’t mean you’re not doing any work. Cycling health benefits include increased cardiovascular fitness, joint mobility, and muscle strength as well as decreasing stress. The more you ride, the better it is for your health and wellness.

Keeping Up With the Kids

“My six-year-old son already outrides me,” admits Melissa, a 40-year old mother who wrote about her experience test riding a Specialized electric bike. “This definitely makes me feel like I could keep up with him!”

Electric bikes can help you keep up with your kids, spouse, friends, or anyone else who may have more riding experience or be used to going further and faster on rides. Instead of declining the group mountain bike ride because of a fear of falling behind, electric bikes can give you the extra boost of confidence (and speed) you need to keep up with the more experienced riders in your life.

Reduced Car Trips

There’s no question that cycling is better for the environment than commuting by vehicle. The average US car emits about a pound of CO2 per mile from burning fuel, while cycling is carbon-free. Even though the environmental benefits of commuting by bike are clear, there is still a surplus of cars on the roads. Clearly, many of us need more motivation to bike to work than doing it for the environment’s sake.

Electric bikes can make commuting by bike much more attractive to casual riders. For one, the peddle-assist can help power a commuter to work without fear of arriving in a sweaty, sodden mess. And the added speed from the ebike means one could arrive to work 4x faster than on a conventional bike.

More electric bikes on the road mean fewer cars and fewer emissions. And that’s a benefit for everyone in the community.

More Fun!

“If you’re not having fun on an ebike, you probably don’t have the assist turned on,” says Janelle. Janelle is no novice to the sport of cycling; she coaches the mountain bike team at a local high school. This experienced rider and mountain bike coach gets the appeal… cycling on an electric bike is simply a whole lot of fun, no matter what your level of expertise is.

How Long Do Ebike Batteries Last and Other Ebike Battery FAQs

So you want to buy an ebike. However, unlike a conventional bike, ebikes come with a few more parts and pieces (like a motor and a battery) that will need your consideration. Before you take the plunge, there are a few questions left to answer. Here are the answers to your biggest questions about ebike batteries:

How Long Will an Ebike Battery Take to Charge?

Your ebike battery will fully charge in 3 to 5 hours. To charge your battery, make sure the battery pack is turned off, remove it from the bike, and connect it to the charger that came with the ebike.

How Long does an Ebike Battery Last?

Just like the gas in your car, the length of time your ebike battery will last depends on multiple factors. Things that can impact your battery life include:
  • Terrain
  • Rider weight and size
  • Assistance mode
Ebikes can offer different levels of assistance, known as modes. Specialized Turbo ebikes, for example, offer three modes: eco, sport, and turbo. Eco provides the least amount of assistance and therefore uses the least amount of battery life. In contrast, turbo mode cranks up the speed with the most assistance but will drain your battery faster. Again, just like the gas in your car, the faster you go the quicker you’ll empty the tank (or battery).

What Happens if the Battery Dies?

If you’ve pushed your ebike to the brink and completely drained your battery, well, congratulations on being a die-hard and challenging your limits! Luckily, you’re still on a fully functioning bicycle which will operate in the old-fashioned way: with (wo)manpower.

How Can I Tell When the Battery is Low?

Ebikes like the Specialized Turbo series are smart bikes that connect to an app on your phone. Specialized’s Mission Control app allows you to customize motor characteristics, control range, and ensure you get home with enough charge.

What is the Life Expectancy of an Ebike Battery?

Lithium ion batteries like the ones used in ebikes can be charged over 1,000 times with little to no degradation. Many ebike batteries and motors come with a 2-year warranty, and, should you wear out the battery from 1,000+ epic rides after that period, you can always recycle and replace it with a new one.
