Ebike Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Electric Bike in Top Shape

An ebike is a fun way to get outside and get active. Electric bikes come with many benefits, like making it easier to get out and ride more often, reducing reliance on cars, and helping cyclists enjoy longer, more challenging rides! To fully reap the benefits of your ebike, it’s important to keep it in great working condition.

With the right maintenance, your bike will last you many years to come. Make sure your ebike is in good shape with these five electric bike maintenance tips.

5 Electric Bike Maintenance Tips to Keep Your Ebike in Top Shape

#1: Clean & Lube the Chain

The chain on an ebike sees a lot of wear and tear thanks to the bike’s weight and speed. Your chain should always be clean and lubed. This can usually be accomplished by wiping the chain off with a rag and applying fresh lube sparingly. Clean off any excess lube to prevent it from attracting grit.

Note: This may not be necessary if your ebike has a belt drive system.

#2: Check the Brakes

Before you ride, take a moment to ensure your ebike’s brakes are in good working order. Because an ebike can be heavier than a traditional bike and can go at faster speeds, having your brakes in good shape is especially important.

When evaluating your brakes, consider:

  • Your brake pads should be checked for wear and tear regularly.
  • Check the brake assemblies to ensure everything is in the right position.
  • Look at the levers to ensure they aren’t out of place or leaking fluid.
  • Inspect any hoses or cables for leaks or fraying.
  • Look for loose parts or excessive rotor and pad wear.

It’s also strongly recommended that you get your ebike serviced regularly by a qualified professional, as they can help you spot issues you may not be able to. They can evaluate your brakes and perform any necessary maintenance, like brake bleeding.

Roseville Cyclery recommends brake bleeding once a year, which helps remove air that may get caught in the hydraulics of bikes with hydraulic disc brakes.

#3: Keep Your Battery Charged

The battery life on your ebike is impacted by many factors, including the terrain you ride on, the assistance mode you use, and rider weight and size. In general, your ebike battery will take between 3 and 5 hours to fully charge, and can be charged over 1,000 times without degradation.

Your battery can easily be recycled and replaced when it’s time to get a new one. To ensure it’s in good working order, your ebike maintenance specialist will test your battery’s health when you bring your bike in for service.

#4: Make Sure the Tires Are in Good Shape

Make sure your tires are always properly inflated – this will help maximize your mileage. Underinflated tires don’t roll efficiently and won’t support your bike well.

If you notice your tires’ tread is worn out or see noticeable signs of wear, like cracked rubber or other deformities, it’s time to invest in new tires. You’ll want to replace them with tires made specifically for ebikes.

When you bring your bike in for service, your ebike maintenance team can also make sure that your spoke tension is correct and your wheels are true to help you achieve a better ride.

#5: Update the Firmware

Because your ebike is electronic, it may occasionally need a firmware update to keep it running efficiently and effectively.

Depending on the type of bike you have, you may be able to check to see if your firmware needs an update. For example, Specialized ebike owners can check their firmware on the Mission Control App.

Your ebike repair shop can help you run any necessary updates.
